Music journalist and BBC Radio Merseyside presenter Spencer Leigh has written BRITISH POP BEFORE THE BEATLES VOLUME 2 THE PROFILES featuring lengthy essays on Jack Jackson, Larry Parnes, Lita Roza, Eddie Calvert, Clinton Ford, Frankie Vaughan, the Vernons Girls and Johnny Kidd, often with new research and interview material. Spencer Leigh may be the only person to have interviewed 10 of the Vernons Girls - lucky chap!
British Pop Before The Beatles Volume 2 The Profiles edition by Spencer Leigh Arts Photography eBooks
This is part two of an extended, two volume, work, which first appeared as the book, “Halfway to Paradise.” “Halfway to Paradise” was first published in 1996 and began life as fifty hours of taped interviews, for twelve, one hour radio programmes for Radio Merseyside called, "Shakin' All Over." Spencer Leigh expanded those interviews, with over one hundred different people, into a compilation book. When I reviewed this before, I said it was a shame that it has not been revised, re-edited and re-published on kindle, as it is a treasure trove for anyone interested in the early years of British popular music. Thankfully, Spencer Leigh has now done just that – with extra interviews and some explanatory text about who people are and their place in music history – plus this extra volume of profiles of ten people/groups/events from that era.The profiles in this book are of the following: Jack Jackson – an early DJ, Larry Parnes – Mr Parnes, Shilling and Pence; impresario and manager, Lita Roza – first British female solo star to get a number one record, with a song she detested!, Eddie Calvert – the ‘Man with the Golden Trumpet’, Liberace and the Daily Mirror – the story of Liberace’s 1959 libel action against the Daily Mirror, Clinton Ford – the first British artist to have a hit with a country record. Frankie Vaughan – an introverted gentleman, who became an extrovert on stage, The Vernon Girls – an early ‘girl group’ brought together by Vernon’s football pools, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates – responsible for possibly the best British rock and roll record, “Shakin’ All Over” and Frank Ifield – a review piece on Frank Ifield’s 2014 Liverpool show.
Some of these are biographical profiles, interviews and features written for other articles. Oddly enough, the fascinating interview with Larry Parnes, included in this book, was not by Spencer Leigh, but by fellow Radio Merseyside colleague, Bob Azurdia. However, author Spencer Leigh is responsible for the other profiles and is honest enough to admit that the Azurdia tapes, which he discovered, were worth being included here. Like me, Spencer Leigh also thinks Larry Parnes deserves a biography of his own, but admits that finding a publisher for such a project would be difficult. That is a shame, as he was a fascinating man. That is a shame, but this is a very enjoyable read and, if you enjoy the first volume of this work – and if you have any interest in early British pop music you should – then you will also enjoy this. Mr Leigh, can we please have the rest of your books re-released on kindle and, if so, can I put in a word for, ”Speaking Words of Wisdom: Reflections on the Beatles.”
